House from Rūdninkai is a large-format publication exploring the Lithuanian artist Augustas Serapinas’ project of reconstructing the ruin of house from the village of Rūdninkai. Featuring an essay by the curator Anders Kreuger and detailed photographs of the found wooden building as an example of gradually disappearing vernacular Baltic architecture, it provides insight into Serapinas' themes of memory, place, and community.
Over the past three years, Augustas Serapinas acquired several sites of historic vernacular architecture across rural Lithuania. Increasingly disused over time, these century-old structures are threatened by decomposition due to abandonment or destruction for use as firewood. For House from Rūdninkai, Serapinas obtained a dilapidated wooden house located in the southeastern village of Rūdninkai and invited the photographer Andrej Vasilenko to a process of meticulous documentation of the structure’s pine walls, shingled roofs, cobwebs, and vernacular ornaments.
House from Rūdinikai was published on the occasion of the exhibition: Augustas Serapinas, Roof and Walls, Emalin, London, 2022. Design by Systems Studio, London.
